Mama Hen

Free Chicken Toy Knitting Pattern by Raynor Gellatly.

Hey all I hope you are well.
Today I bring you a pattern for a Mama Chicken and her little chick bambino. The inspiration for this pattern came from the love bird free sewing pattern  over at Molly Chicken. Isn't she adorable wearing a little apron to carry her baby. Make sure to keep an eye on that little removable cheeky chick because it likes to wander!

When I started knitting this up I was a bit sceptical at how it would turn out and was actually thinking about scrapping it. Come to think of it I should really write a post about the amount of patterns I start but then scrap due to them not turning out how they look in my head! I set the piece aside and came back to it and i'm so glad I did because I love love love the finished toy. For any baby wearers out there I think this toy would be fantastic if your babies have any siblings. I promised this Mrs Hen to my eldest daughter and I think i'm probably going to knit up a brown one as a friend or perhaps even a Daddy Chicken, since it's cool for daddies to wear their babies too!

There are a few little bits to this pattern (which are always fiddly) but it's a really quick knit and I hope you love the end toy.

Enjoy and as always I want to see your finished toys so please add to our Ravelry or Flickr pages.

Mr & Mrs Tashe

For the last few years I've been noticing this super cute moustache trend with handmade items. It seems that adding a moustache to anything makes it super cute and rather trendy. So it appears the idea of a hairy upper lip had stuck in my mind as a few days ago I was doodling and then these guys appeared on the page. I love them and they make the perfect couple. I might even need to make a pattern for a little tashy baby to complete the family!

Mr. Tashe
Mrs. Tashe

Materials
• Set of  4 mm needles (UK size 8, US size 6)
• Yarn needle
• Stitch holder (or spare needle)
• Toy stuffing
• 7mm black safety eyes
• Scrap of Black Felt

Yarn colours
• Grey
• Pink

Yarn weight: Double knitting/ worsted weight

Gauge: not important but make it tight so stuffing doesn’t show through

Finished measurements: approx 4.5" tall and 4" wide (including arms)

Legs & Body
CO 12 in grey yarn

1-8. (Begin with purl) St-St 8 rows
9. Place a row marker on the last stitch of row 8
10. Cut the yarn leaving a long yarn tail for sewing up later and place the stitches on a spare needle or a stitch holder.
11-18. Cast on another 12 st and repeat steps 1-9
19. Join the two pieces together on the one needle with the wrong side (purl side) face up and purl along the row (24sts)
20- 35. St-st for 16 rows
36. *k2tog, k2* along (18sts)
37. Purl
38. *k2tog, k1* along (12sts)
39. purl
40. *k2tog* along (6 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Draw tail through remaining stitches and pull tightly and secure. Use tail to mattress stitch row ends closed stopping  once you reach the row markers. St this point you may want to embroider on eyes or add safety toy eyes. At this point split your rows into two legs and continue to mattress stitch down one side until you reach the cast on stitches. Repeat on the other side  using the long tail end from step 10 to mattress stitch down the leg until you reach the cast on stitches. At this point you can fill the toy with stuffing until you reach the desired fullness. Close remaining openings on each leg by whip stitching the two cast on ends together and secure any loose yarn ends.

Arms (make 2)
CO 3 in grey
1-10. St-St 10 rows
BO

Bind off leaving a long yarn tail. Fold the arm in half length ways so the cast on stitches meet the bind off stitches and whip stich along the open edges to close them off. Use the CO/BO edge and attach the arm to the body just above the legs.

10. BO (leave a ling yarn tail)

Use the long yarn tail on each side to attach the bow onto the side of the head.

Choosing your Tashe
Copyright of Pink Moustache

For the moustache I free hand cut out a little 'ring master' moustache from black felt. This may be easier if you fold the piece in half to it is symmetrical once unfolded. However if you would like an alternate to the 'ring master' style or would like a template then I have found an awesome bunch of free moustache vectors available for free from 'Pink Moustache' which you can download here.

I would love to see these guys in a variety of colours so let me see what you can come up with.
Happy Knitting

Boo!

Free Halloween Ghost Toy Knitting Pattern by Raynor Gellatly.

Halloween is coming, Halloween is coming, the geese are getting fat......
Spooky greetings my fellow knitters! Can you believe it's October already? To celebrate one of the biggest holidays of the year I've made this little ghost. He is quite small so I'm not sure what he is exactly, a little gift fot trick or treaters, tiny baby toy, part of a halloween costume or perhaps even a little decoration for a Halloween display. Whatever you chose to make him for I'm sure you'll agree he is far too cute to be scary, but he tries his best.

Remember to post you finished toy pictures to the flickr group or to your projects on Ravelry because I just love seeing how other peoples toys turn out.

Travelling Gnome

Free Travelling Gnome Toy Knitting Pattern by Raynor Gellatly.

If anyone has ever seen the magically whimsical film Amelie then they will know about the story of the travelling gnome. If you haven't seen it then basically it tells the tale of a gnome who was stolen from her fathers garden and only to be returned with pictures of him at famous landmarks around the world!
So when I seen the Simply a gnome! pattern by Else Tennessen I knew I had to make a knitted version, just like the little Amalie gnome.
He is quite simple to make, although his base is a little tricky wiht the increasing but otherwise really quick to knit up and super cute when he's done.
So if your going on your travels soon or you know someone who is then knit them up one of these little guys to take with them and then get them to take their own little travelling gnome pictures, I'd love to see any pictures if anyone did this.

Here's pictures of my very own little gnome on his travels.

Amigurumi Mistletoe

Free Christmas Mistletoe Toy Knitting Pattern by Raynor Gellatly.

Hey all,
Seems like forever since I've last posted. Just got back into the swing of knitting now I'm off for the holidays. So as it's 'that' time of year I had been searching for some adorable patterns to convert when i stumbled across this crochet mistletoe by Riot of Daisies, as you can see that pattern was inspired by a website call Kawaii Not, and this cartoon by Megan Murphy . Honestly I love that website, I have been reading it for a while and Megan has got a great sense of humour, I love how she gives such personality to totally inanimate objects.

So here is a little Christmas/new year decoration for you to quickly whip up.seriously it will take you no more than a few hours at the most to whip up this little cutie.

Sugar Bunny

Free Bunny Rabbit Toy Knitting Pattern by Raynor Gellatly.

This pattern has been in my free project pipeline for a long time. The original is a very popular crochet rabbit from the Lions Brand website known as Best Bunny, I think this finished toy is adorable and so sweet hence why I've re-named it as the Sugar Bunny.
This toy was a huge hit with my one year old, she swiped it as soon as I had finished it off. however my two year old also wanted to give it hugs so it looks like i'll have to be knitting up more already. At least it has the official child seal of approval!
As always I love seeing the variety of toys people come up from my patterns so I'd love to see these adorable little bunnies knit in a whole array of colours, and remember to show off you work on the knitted toy box group.

This pattern is now available in Spanish thank to the wonderful Hatsuka for taking time to translate. Click here for Spanish translation.

Milk & Cookies

Free Milk & Cookie Toy Knitting Pattern by Raynor Gellatly.

Ok apologies first off since it has been forever since I posted a pattern on this blog, I've had loads that I want to make into free patterns but being a bit of a procrastinator I never get around to it.
Anyway this is one of my original patterns that I no longer have for sale and it's just sitting away looking lonely as there is nobody to make these little guys. And oh do you want to make these because the only two words to describe them are SUPA KAWAII!!

The little heart in the picture was created using the mochi mochi land free heart pattern which you can find by clicking here. Whilst your there have a look at Anna's other patterns both for free and for sale because she is an amazingly talented designer, I love the randomness of her work.

The milk also reminds me of milky the little carton from the Blur 'coffee and tv' music video, so if you know anyone who is a milky fan then knit one up for them.
My usual copyright blurb still stands for these little fellows, i.e go forth and multiply them, even sell them but show the love and don't sell the pattern.

So here's the pattern go and grab your needles and knit up the greatest love story ever told!

Seaming Schematics
MilkThe black dotted lines in the diagram represent areas which should be folded. The following steps should be carried out with the right side facing towards you. Use whip stitch for all the steps apart from step 7 where mattress stitch is used.

Step 1.
Sew together the areas indicated by the red dotted lines.
Photobucket

Step 2.
Sew together the areas indicated by the red dotted lines.
Photobucket

Step3.
Sew together the areas indicated by the red dotted lines.

Step 4.
Sew together the areas indicated by the red dotted lines.
Photobucket

Step 5.
With the black dotted edges folded inwards, pin together the top edge of the white coloums and sew together.
Photobucket

Step 6.
Now take the extended blue flap and fold over the middle, then sew down both vertical edges. Then sew the horizontal edge against the diagonal edge as indicated by the red dotted lines
Photobucket

The top of the toy should now be looking like a folded milk carton top.
At this point you may like to add the facial features.

Step 7.
Sew together the two row ends indicated by the red dotted lines using mattress stitch for invisible seaming.
Photobucket

At this stage you may like to stuff the toy with polyester toy stuffing for a squishy effect or foam wadding so the finished toy has more structure.

Step 8.
Sew the remaining white edges to the bottom edges of the blue rows as indicated by the red dotted lines
Photobucket

CookieStep 1.
Sew together the row ends of the biscuit top
Photobucket

To achieve an invisible seam with garter stitch sew together using the following method:
Photobucket

Join the bottom loop of one row and join it to the top loop of the corresponding row. Follow the diagram for direction. Unlike the diagram the seam must be pulled together as it is worked.

Once the biscuit pieces have been seamed into circles, then attached facial features to one of the biscuit pieces.

Step 2.
Take the filling row and sew together the row ends to make a hoop.

Step 3.
Take the hoop and pin the cast on edge to the wrong side of the bottom biscuit piece. Sew the edges to the biscuit piece.

Step 4.
Take a small amount of polyester toy filling and place it in the little cup of the bottom biscuit and filling piece. A bird’s eye view of cookie should look like this:
Photobucket

Step 5.
Take the top biscuit piece with the face, top side up and pin it to the bind off edge of the filling hoop.
Sew the edges of the filling to the biscuit piece.

Other Information
• If you wish the toy to be for a child under 3 years old or for a pet, I strongly recommend that you embroider on any features to reduce any choking hazard.
• If you fill the whole milk with saftey stuffing the toy is very squishy and won't keep its shape for too long unless its only used for display, if you prefer it to have more ridity then filling it with blocks of foam may be better.
• For a variation on the milk try knitting it in pink for strawberry milk, yellow for banana milk or brown for chocolate milk.

♥Amigurumi Lovebug ♥

Long time no see, today I have another pattern for you all. Another crochet toy converted from the fantastic pattern by Heliina, you can find the crochet version here. Not only did she make a pretty little pink lovebug but by simply changing the colours you can make yourself a sweet little buzzy bee. My version is all knitted but I love how Heliina has added felt and pipe cleaners for more detail, especially the adorable heart shaped antennae.
So show how much you love someone by giving them a little lovebug and brighten up their day.

Materials· Set of 3.75mm needles (UK size 9, US size 5)
· Set of 3mm needles (UK size 11, US size 2 ½)
· Set of 3mm double pointed needles (optional for I-Cord)
· Yarn needle
· Toy stuffing
· Optional: black safety eyes, beads, buttons or felt for features, pipe cleaners.

Yarn colours· Pink
· Red
· Scraps of black yarn/thread if embroidering the eyes and mouth

Yarn weight: Double knitting/ worsted weight

Gauge: not important but make it tight so stuffing doesn’t show through

Finished measurements: approx 3.5” tall and 2” wide (excluding antennae and wings)

Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Draw tail through remaining stitches and pull tightly and secure. Shape the wider part of the antennae into the shape of a ball and sew over so a nice round shape is achieved.
Assembly:
Sew yarn tail from the head onto the bind off stitches of the body.
Sew the wings about halfway down on the body, sew them on so that they are symmetrical.
Sew the antennae onto the top of the head making sure they are symmetrical.

Face Features:
The lovebug in the pattern photograph has black toy safety eyes (size 5mm) Black mouth embroidered on with yarn. I would not recommend given this toy to a child under 3 years old if safety eyes are used. To make it safe to give to a child from birth I suggest embroidering eyes on with yarn, this makes the toy completely safe for any child from birth as the features cannot be easily removed or fall off.

Alternative features :
· Small button eyes
· Small bead eyes
· Glue on ‘googly’ eyes
· Felt eyes
· Pipe cleaner antennae

** WARNING: When using any embellishments please be aware of these may be choking hazards if given to small children or babies**
